Published in 1948, Patrick Kavanagh’s quintessential rural Irish novel was initially banned by the Irish censorship board. We will accompany the eponymous hero, Tarry Flynn, in his quest for land, women and the meaning of life. The impoverished peasant farmer emerges as “noble savage” in this dark, but often lyrical, depiction of rural Ulster in the 1930s.

This course will be delivered through a combination of presentation and class discussion. Students should purchase their own copy of the text (available from Penguin Modern Classics).

Suitable for C1/C2 learners as well as for native speakers.
